One thing that Covid has taught everyone is not to fully rely on your regular 9–5 job. Although I have a lucky one unimpacted by the pandemic, that is not the case with everybody else. To be honest, I would not say it is the pandemic which motivated me to start these side hustles as I had started it over a year before pandemic hit this planet. Here are the 5 side hustles which generate me over $1500 every month.

Youtube channel — Knowledge Center & Puzzled

I started a Youtube channel named Knowledge Center back in late 2017, but left it after adding a few videos and not seeing much movement there. I was away from it for around a whole year, when I decided to start it again, and this time the needle moved. I hit 1000 subscribers in a few months. It was my first real side hustle. After my channel got monetized, it was a great sense of accomplishment to generate a real source of income apart from regular job as a Machine Learning Software Engineer. Gradually over time my channel has gained subscribers, and now it stands at over 30k and generates a revenue of 500–600 USD at the time of writing this story.

I also started a Youtube channel for puzzles and brainteasers, named Puzzled just a couple of months back. Although its not currently generating any revenue, it has a good potential.

Teaching on Udemy

Teaching on youtube gave me enough practice and confidence to start creating a few software development and machine learning courses on Udemy. Some of the lessons I directly picked from my youtube channel and compiled and added more lessons to create classes. After adding a couple of small courses, it started to generate 20–30 USD, which quickly increased to 400–500 USD over a span of 6–8 months. One time, it had surpassed Youtube’s earnings by a large factor, but it fluctuates a lot unlike Youtube. And now I haven’t added courses to this platform for some time, and the sales have decreased a bit. Now it generated around 400 USD per month.

Teaching on Skillshare

Teaching on Udemy was not very different from teaching on Skillshare. I already had courses curated for Udemy. Skillshare differs from Udemy in that it follows subscription model rather than one-time purchase of courses. It pays the instructors based on premium minutes watched of all your course. This model is well-suited for beginners like me, since people who are already subscribed to Skillshare would not hesitate to watch a few minutes of even a new course from anew instructor. Right after I published my first course on machine learning, it generated a few minutes of view. It was exciting to see your work generating income passively. You can also earn some referral bonus if somebody signs up and subscribes using your referral link. First month itself I got 30 USD and now it has increased to around 300 USD. You can also subscribe using this link and get access to all the premium courses free for 1 month. You can unsubscribe after a month.

Teaching on Graphy

I was approached by Graphy from Unacademy to create a few courses on their platform. I would not say a passive source of income, since it follows different teaching model, and there is a concept of ongoing courses, and then registration closes and then your revenue stops. Then you need to start fresh batch to start earning again. But, for the efforts I would say it generates around 100–200 USD per month on average for me.

Authoring a book on Programming

I was approached by a renowned publisher to author a book on a programming language, which is not complete yet, but nearing completion, and is expected to generate some royalty from the sale of physical and ebooks, which can take my total earnings from side hustles close to 2k USD. I cannot reveal the exact details of the book before it is published. But even without it my cumulative earnings from side hustles are around 1500 USD.

Apart from these I started earning some Hi coins for free from Hi.com. Please check my story on how to earn earning Hi Dollars: https://knowledgecenter.medium.com/how-i-generate-50-daily-free-and-passive-6255d8b64efa
